In Brief: An accident in Sandy's transporting machine cause SpongeBob and Squidward to combine into one.
Story: Squidward dreams about his upcoming clarinet recital, and is looking forward to it when he wakes up. On his way to work, he practices for it. Meanwhile, SpongeBob stops by at Sandy's and finds her new invention: a machine that transports matter to different places. SpongeBob asks her to transport him to work, so she does. When he arrives, a malfunction with the transporter ends up merging Squidward and SpongeBob into one form. To seperate them, Sandy tries zapping them back into the transporter, but this fails. It instead transports the boys through a school, a hospital and outer space. Sandy tells them she's working on an invention that will solve this and to try waiting.
SpongeBob and Squidward have a hard time working together at the Krusty Krab. Mr. Krabs ends up kicking them out. The two visit Sandy, and she tells them that she's working on a Molecular Separator device to separate them. The ray is expected to be finished in a few days, but Squidward has his clarinet recital the next day. Sandy says she'll try to finish before.
It is the night of the recital and Sandy doesn't show up. SpongeBob convinces reluctant Squidward to go out and play. On stage, SpongeBob hides under Squid's purple cloak as he plays. A nail in the floor causes it to tear off, and the audience sees the gene-scrambled boys. They cheer at the sight of them messed up, and Squidward gets the feel of being a star. Sandy then races in and separates the two, making them and the audience feel disappointed. Everybody leaves. Squidward, not wanting his one moment of fame gone, uses the ray to reverse the separation. This results in him, SpongeBob, Sandy, Patrick, Mr. Krabs, Mrs. Puff and Pearl to all combine into one.

Quotes:
Customer: *sees Sponge and Squid stuck together, biking* I gotta lay off the hot sauce.
Squidward: Do you have to be such an accommodating buffoon?
SpongeBob: Squidward, everybody knows I'm a sponge. I look nothing like a balloon.
Surfer Fish: *sees Sponge and Squid mixed together* Whoa! Rock on, Freaky Bro!
Wife: *hears Squidward play music* Honey, I'm scared.
Observations:
Musician Reference Squidward has a Beethoven hairstyle in his dream. Like Beethoven, Squidward is a musician in his dream.
Little Variety Bikini Bottom Elementary only has a slide for playground equipment.
In Space In outer space, the planet Saturn has a bunch of orange spots on it. Space is also animated in this episode. In other episodes, anything above the sea is not animated, but real.
Without Falling Over... SpongeBob moves the bike with one pedal using his "right leg" (Squid's tentacles) in the Krusty Krab.
Famous Squid Squidward is a celebrity in this episode. The recreation center has a sign with his name in big letters, the line to get in is really long and the auditorium is packed.
Reactions After SpongeBob and Squidward are separated, Squidward's music causes the audience to cover their ears and close their eyes in disgust; an old man to fall over in his chair; an old lady to run to vomit; a man's skin to tear off, revealing his skeleton; and the audience to leave, booing and complaining.
Human Bones The skeleton of the fish greatly resembles a human's. It includes a human-shaped skull and fingers.
Goggles Sandy wears protective goggles on the outside of her air helmet at the recital.
Water-Breather? Sandy doesn't wear her air helmet in therapy. Also, there appears to be an eyeball sticking out by Squidward's neck when everyone becomes one form. Nobody visible seems to be missing an eye.
Lucky Larry Larry the Lobster, who's there when Squidward fires the ray, doesn't end up in the gene-scramble. Also, Patrick, Mrs. Puff, Larry and Pearl are all at the recital, but they don't speak in this episode.
