In Brief: SpongeBob and Patrick find an abandoned baby scallop and become its parents.
Story: While outside playing with their rubber bands from their newspapers, SpongeBob and Patrick run into each other. They each hear noises and discover a chirping baby scallop on the ground. With no parents to take care of it, the two take it into the pineapple. They struggle to find some food for it, until they find a worm. After feeding it to him, "Junior" cries, so Patrick knows what to do. He puts a diaper on him. The two realize that they'd make great parents for Junior, so Patrick becomes his dad and SpongeBob becomes his mom.
The two boys spend a day of playing and fun with Junior. That night, they agree that being a parent is fun. The next morning, SpongeBob serves Patrick a big breakfast. After he eats, he says he can't help with the scallop because he has to go to work. SpongeBob, who is very busy with the housework and Junior, is told by Patrick that he will help after work.
Patrick comes home from work and says he's too tired to help out with Junior. He sits down to watch TV and promises he'll help out tomorrow. He makes a habit of promising and then not helping, which keeps happening each night. Finally, SpongeBob tells him that he needs to help out and convinces him to say he will by showing him how many diapers Junior is using.
The next morning, Patrick promises to come home from work at 6:00 and give SpongeBob the night off. His promise wears off, as he comes home from a party at midnight. The parents get in an argument, and Patrick leaves to go back to his workplace (his rock, where he sits and watches TV and eats). They argue more about Patrick claiming his rock is his workplace, until they see Junior, about to fall from a window at the pineapple. The two rush to save him, but see they didn't catch him. It turns out Junior saved himself by flying. Because he can fly, he's all grown up, and he can live on his own. SpongeBob and Patrick let him go off, and Pat wants to have another.
Song: (none)
Quotes:
SpongeBob: *seeing a scallop on the ground* It's a baby scallop.
Patrick: *angrily, with his foot ready to stomp* I'll take care of this!
SpongeBob: *talking about the scallop* It looks like he can't even fly yet.
Patrick: Well, what's the matter? Is he stupid?
SpongeBob: *after Patrick finds out Junior needs a diaper and puts one on him* How did you know?
Patrick: Well, how do you think? *pulls down his pants, revealing a diaper on him, too* And I've been doing it all by myself for almost a year.
SpongeBob: Do you remember what you said to me this morning?
Patrick: Something about root beer, right?
SpongeBob: *sighs* No.
Patrick: Oh, wait, wait, let me guess. *tiny pause* I give up.
SpongeBob: *referring to Patrick's "job"* So, this is work?
Patrick: You know, it's not as easy as it looks. Sometimes, I gotta move the antennae. Sometimes I lose the remote. And sometimes my butt itches real bad.
Observations:
Rubber Bands SpongeBob and Patrick's rubber bands come off by snapping in half.
Temporary Shaking In the far shot of the baby scallop chirping, the coral it's next to shakes at each chirp. In the closeup of the scallop chirping, the coral doesn't move.
Color Change While SpongeBob is saying "We need a box for him to sleep in," his right arm and hand switch from the color yellow to gray.
Living Puppet SpongeBob's hand puppet that is a miniature version of himself sweats and blinks.
Other End Patrick looks into the scallop's mouth to see if he needs a diaper.
Tattoo Patrick has a anchor tattoo on his right arm when he says being a mom would be shocking for him due to his hairy and big body.
Early Clue You can see Patrick is not in the same bed as SpongeBob before it's revealed in the shot of him saying "I never thought being a parent can be this much fun." To his left, where we're supposed to believe SpongeBob is, you can see the edge of his mattress.
Remote=Light Switch The living room lights turn off when Patrick turns on the television.
Floor-Cleaning When SpongeBob is doing all the housework at once with his many arms in the living room, he vacuums and mops the floor.
From Mother to Father When SpongeBob is running to the window to catch Junior, he says "Come to Daddy." SpongeBob is actually the mother.
