In Brief: SpongeBob's grotesque "sundae" gives him bad breath, which he doesn't smell, and everyone runs from him. Patrick thinks everybody avoids him because he's ugly.

Story: SpongeBob wakes up one morning and makes a sundae out of ketchup, onions, and a peanut plant. After eating the sundae, SpongeBob's breath smells terrible.

Downtown, SpongeBob says hello to some people. They all smell his breath and react in some bad way. Not knowing about his breath, he wonders what's wrong. Patrick (who doesn't have a nose) doesn't understand, so he decides that they think he's ugly. He gives SpongeBob a "reflection test" with a mirror. SpongeBob's reflection smells his breath and shatters the glass he's in. The two declare him ugly. To make sure he isn't ugly, SpongeBob runs around asking people if he's ugly, but they react badly when they smell his breath. He must be ugly.

That night, Patrick visits SpongeBob and sees that he is ashamed of his ugliness. He tells him he always screams when he has problems. He takes SpongeBob to the roof of the pineapple to scream. On the roof, SpongeBob feels better after screaming "I'm ugly and I'm proud!" a lot. Now that SpongeBob is happy, the two decide to go to the movie theater.

When Patrick and SpongeBob arrive in the theater, SpongeBob's breath drives away everyone. The boys go to the snack bar, but can't buy anything with no workers there. SpongeBob lets Patrick eat his leftover sundae in his pocket. Patrick runs to the bathroom after eating it, and the people in there run when he talks to them. Patrick thinks he inherited SpongeBob's "ugly." When SpongeBob comes to check on him, he finds him crying on a toilet with a bag on his head. Patrick blames him for giving him "the ugly," but SpongeBob smells his horrible breath. He comes to the conclusion that the sundae gave them bad breath, and they're not ugly. The two run around, celebrating their bad breath.

Quotes:

SpongeBob: Hi parade! Hi Tuba Player! Hi Drummer! Hi Guy With the Cymbals! Hi Trumpeter! Hi Tambourine Girl! Hi Timbale Man! Hi Didjeridu Player! Hi Triangle Player! Hi Guy With The Kettle Drum! Hi Pianist! Hi Guy With The Flute! And hello Dolly!

SpongeBob: I’m confused.

Patrick: Yes I am.

SpongeBob: No one would want a friend as ugly as I am.

Patrick: Sure they would! It makes them feel better about the way they look.

Patrick: Maybe a story will cheer you up. It’s called The Ugly Barnacle. Once there was an ugly barnacle. He was so ugly, everyone died. The end.

Patrick: SpongeBob, you're never gonna feel better until you get this thing off your chest.

SpongeBob: I know, Patrick. *pulls a creature that's clinged to his chest off and tosses it*

SpongeBob: *to a fish* Hi, I’m very ugly, but you should enjoy the movie anyway.

Observations:

On the Bottle The humongous ketchup bottle SpongeBob uses is labeled "Katsup" - a combination of the words "ketchup" and "catsup."

Things in SpongeBob's Cupboard:

-Three bananas

-Four cherries

-A small green jar

-A purple box

-Twelve small blobs in different areas

Change of Color Later when SpongeBob is making his sundae, the ketchup in the bowl that was first red is now brown.

DVD Error On the DVDs, there is an error when SpongeBob greets the building that runs away from his breath. The dialogue should be "Hi, building," but instead, the dialogue said by SpongeBob and Patrick after that ("I just don't get it" and "I don't either") is used.

Night to Sunset When Patrick comes to SpongeBob's house, there is a nightime sky in the background, but when they go on the roof to scream, the sky is sunset-colored.

Thirsty Starfish Patrick brings three drinks for him in the theater.

Familiar Face One of the people in the movie theater that SpongeBob "gets rid of" with his breath looks like Scooter, the surfer fish.

Other Episodes Squidward also tans in "I was a Teenage Gary" and "Party Pooper Pants." SpongeBob also goes to the movie theater in "F.U.N."
