In Brief: Squidward gets sick of SpongeBob's laughing, so he tells him one more giggle will destroy his laugh box.

Story: SpongeBob comes to Squidward's house one morning to tell him it's time for work. Squidward makes a remark about how cheap Mr. Krabs is, causing SpongeBob to laugh all day and night at work. The laughter still continues the next day, and SpongeBob's side starts to hurt from it. Squidward sits him down in the kitchen and tells him he must stop this or he'll burn out his laugh box and never chuckle again. For 24 hours, SpongeBob must not laugh.

It's a challenge for SpongeBob to not laugh. Patick slips on a banana peel three times and makes a funny noise with his lips and finger and a truck accident leaves whoopie cushions and pies all over downtown Bikini Bottom. To escape everything funny, SpongeBob buries himself in sand in the middle of nowhere for 24 hours.

The next morning, SpongeBob emerges from the sand and discovers he can't laugh. Patrick tries taking a look inside but just starts the inside of SpongeBob on fire. Mr. Krabs tells SpongeBob that he'll laugh if he touches the pile of money (Krabs says money is the ultimate source of joy), but nothing happens. Sandy tells SpongeBob there's a scientific reason why he can't laugh and gives him books to read about laughter.

After reading the books, SpongeBob still can't laugh and feels miserable. All night and morning he cries. His tears even flood the neighborhood. Squidward tells SpongeBob that he has no broken laugh box and it was all made up just to shut him up. This causes both SpongeBob and Squidward to laugh, and eventually Squidward laughs so much that he has to be rushed to the hospital.

At the hospital, Sandy, SpongeBob, Mr. Krabs and Patrick are there for Squidward when he wakes up. They tell him he broke his laugh box and it had to be removed. (Mr. Krabs even says it was the tiniest, dried-out and under-used laugh box the doctor ever saw). Squidward feels horrible that he'll never laugh again, but the doctor tells him he was transplanted part of a laugh box - from SpongeBob. Now he has a laugh that sounds exactly like SpongeBob's!

Quotes:

SpongeBob: Time for work, Squidward. Another day, another dollar! *laughs*

Squidward: More like another nickel.

Squidward: Tell me SpongeBob, have your sides been hurting?

SpongeBob: Yeah, a little.

Squidward: *dips thermometer in hot oil* And your temperature is 175 degrees!

SpongeBob: I went a whole day without laughing and now my laugh is gone.

Patrick: Let me take a look. *shoves his head in SpongeBob's mouth*

Squidward: *talking about SpongeBob* I really hate to see the little guy so sad, but not as much as I hate to see him happy!

Sandy: *to Squidward* You broke your laugh box.

Mr. Krabs: The doctor said it was the most tiny, dried-out, underused laugh box he ever laid eyes on.

Patrick: So their cut it out.

Squidward: *shocked* Cut it out?!

Patrick: Yeah! *holds up jar with liquid and laugh box* Wanna see it? It's fun to shake it up and watch it bounce around.

Observations:

SpongeBob Running Around When SpongeBob runs around laughing in circles, through the kitchen and out Mr. Krabs' office, he makes it in and out the doors in less than two seconds. There are also normally no doors that connect the two, but what's it matter, it's a cartoon. ;)

Squid's Bed Squidward's bed is right next to his window after he arrives home from work at night. In the beginning of the episode and towards the end, it isn't so close to the window and there's two tables with lamps around it.

Truck Crash The whoopie cushion truck crash leaves whoopie cushions all over the street, one on top of a street light and a few on top of an awning.

Air The whoopie cushions SpongeBob steps on are already filled with air.

Pie in the Wheel The pie truck has a grape pie inside the steering wheel.

Less than 24 Hours SpongeBob likely went without laughing for less than 24 hours. It was likely midday when he started to stop laughing (people wouldn't be eating Krabby Patties in the morning), and early in the morning the next day he said it's been 24 hours.

Laugh Books Sandy gives SpongeBob ten textbooks to read about laughter.

SpongeBob's Crying SpongeBob's crying causes Squidward's clarinet to fly out of his mouth, his music stand to tip over and all of the pictures on the wall to tilt.

Tea Kettle Next to Squidward's hospital bed is a tea kettle.

Other Episode References Like the episode "Squirrel Jokes," this episode's title card background is a brick wall. Patrick also goes inside SpongeBob's body to "find his problem" in "Patty Hype."
